Insurgents Suspected in Slayings of 22 Farmers

A little-known insurgent group involved in a tribal conflict in India’s remote northeast allegedly abducted and killed at least 22 farmers, forcing authorities to call in the army, police said. Gunmen believed to be members of the Hmar Peoples Convention stormed through Assam state’s Cachar district, burning huts and taking 28 hostages, police said.
Police searched the dense jungles and found the bodies of 22 farmers who had been shot, an officer said. The other six people were being sought.
