From Times Staff Reports
The City Council on Friday approved the permanent use of Mexican consulate identification cards as identification for undocumented immigrants. City officials called a six-month trial period successful.
The council also instructed the city attorney to set criteria for accepting consular identification cards from other nations.
The cards allow illegal immigrants to borrow books from city libraries, obtain water and power services and be cited and released by police for minor traffic violations rather than being taken to jail.
