Dorrell Is Close to Hiring Akina

UCLA football Coach Karl Dorrell is close to hiring Duane Akina as defensive coordinator and believes Bill Musgrave would be a good fit as offensive coordinator.
Musgrave, the offensive coordinator at Virginia, was interviewed Tuesday at UCLA. Akina, the secondary coach at Texas, is expected to be interviewed today or Saturday.
Although sources close to the Texas program said Akina expects an offer, UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero has made it clear he wants the new coordinators to have experience in those roles.
Akina might get by on a technicality. He was offensive coordinator at Arizona for several years in the 1990s under Coach Dick Tomey. After Tomey resigned two years ago, John Mackovic named Akina defensive coordinator, but Akina left for Texas.
Musgrave, a former Oregon and NFL quarterback, was offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers before coming to Virginia in 2001. Dorrell has not offered Musgrave a job and might interview other candidates.
