Proposal to Split 909 Area Code Opposed

Times Staff Writer

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted to oppose a plan to split off several communities into a new area code.

Supervisor Dennis Hansberger pressed his colleagues to oppose the plan under consideration by the California Public Utilities Commission that would put Oak Glen, Forest Falls and portions of Yucaipa and Angelus Oaks in a new 951 area code. The rest of the county would remain in the 909 area code.

A resolution drafted by Hansberger recommends that the commission reject the proposal and instead adopt a plan that would keep all of San Bernardino County and the adjacent city of Calimesa in the 909 area code. The rest of Riverside County would be in the 951 area code.

Hansberger said the plan to split San Bernardino County into two area codes would pose a hardship for residents and businesses who would have to reprint stationery and reprogram automatic dialing devices.

The commission has scheduled public hearings on the proposal for Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Riverside City Council’s chambers and July 15 at 7 p.m. at the San Bernardino City Council’s chambers.

Other meetings are scheduled next week in Murrieta, Moreno Valley and Ontario.
