From Times Wire Reports
Scores of people were killed as rebels fought troops loyal to Liberian President Charles Taylor for control of the strategic central town of Gbarnga, Defense Minister Daniel Chea said.
Last year, the rebels seized Gbarnga, which used to be Taylor’s headquarters during a seven-year civil war that cost 200,000 lives. The town is still in the heartland of support for Taylor. It is also on the main road from Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, to neighboring Ivory Coast, where Liberian fighters have joined both sides of a civil war.
