U.S. and British forces advanced across the harsh terrain of southern Iraq on Friday, some racing unimpeded across the desert, others contending with hostile fire.
Outgunned and uninspired,
hundreds of Iraqi soldiers surrendered, their raised arms and white flags a testament to their unwillingness to die for Saddam Hussein. One top Iraqi commander also surrendered, U.S. officials said.
Although resistance was in many places minimal, the United States
suffered its first combat casualties of the war when two Marines were killed in separate firefights in southern Iraq, not far from the Kuwaiti border.
By Friday night, U.S. forces had advanced about 100 miles into Iraq
from Kuwait, said Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff.
