A Rolling Tale

While the first cross-country automobile trip might seem noteworthy (Opinion, April 27), it represents a retrograde step in traveling. By the time of Horatio Nelson Jackson’s automobile trip, hundreds of bicyclists had ridden it, and faster. The first transcontinental road trip occurred 19 years earlier, when Thomas Stevens rode his bicycle from San Francisco to Boston. And based on the pictures of Jackson pushing and towing his automobile, it is safe to say that Stevens had more fun. He must have -- he continued on across Europe and Asia to Japan.
