Separated Twin Is Doing Well After Surgery

From Times Wire Reports

A Guatemalan girl separated from her conjoined twin at UCLA was recuperating well after surgery in Guatemala City to replace a valve in her skull that had become infected, hospital officials said Saturday.

Doctors replaced the valve during a three-hour surgery Friday and the girl, Maria Teresa Quiej Alvarez, was recuperating well a day later, a nurse said.

Maria Teresa and her sister, Maria de Jesus, were born on July 25, 2001, in the city of Mazatenango, some 110 miles southwest of Guatemala’s capital. They were separated Aug. 6 in a 23-hour operation at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA.
