Playing for the Love of the Game
Sean Mitchell has accurately and eloquently portrayed the beauty of Division III athletics, where young men and women play for the love of the game (“The Days of (Athletic) Innocence,” Metropolis, April 6). At Whittier College, as at all Division III institutions, our student athletes are students first, and we are very proud of that. Our NCAA men’s lacrosse team is currently ranked first in the nation, and back when it was a club team, it routinely beat UCLA, USC and Cal.

This essay should be required reading in all schools! I’d like to express my joy on learning that there is at least one sports fan who seems to keep the role of sports in perspective.
