A man was killed on Interstate 5 on Friday night when a piece of brake drum, possibly from a big-rig truck, crashed through the windshield of the sport utility vehicle he was riding in and struck him in the head, the California Highway Patrol said.
The accident in the southbound lanes near Vista Hermosa Street in San Clemente occurred about 8:50 p.m., CHP Officer Dave Ferrer said. Authorities believe the unidentified man was in the passenger seat of a Chevy Tahoe behind the truck when the brake drum struck him.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the Tahoe, also unidentified, may have been injured by the broken glass, Ferrer said.
CHP is checking with truck scales to find the truck whose brake drum came off.
