Officials, Rebels Try to Salvage Peace Deal

Indonesian officials and rebel leaders met in an effort to save an agreement to end decades of violence in Aceh province, and Security Minister Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono said in Jakarta that a military offensive is “almost certain” if the talks fail.
It was unclear how much progress was made in the Tokyo talks between representatives of the government and the Free Aceh Movement. Both sides told mediators they remained committed to a Dec. 9 agreement that envisions autonomy but not independence for the region.
