“Look Back in Anger”: John Osborne’s work tells the story of Jimmy Porter, a man of talent and intellect who is going to waste in a one-room British flat, spewing bile in his frustration and embodying the archetypal angry young man. Among his prime targets are the British social structure; his wife, Alison, and her upper-crust roots; and Alison’s actress friend Helena, whose arrival sets the plot churning. When Osborne’s play hit the London stage in 1956, this previously unseen eruption of rage was a watershed: “Osborne didn’t contribute to British theater,” wrote his fellow playwright Alan Sillitoe. “He set off a land mine and blew most of it up.”
