High-Speed Crash Kills Passenger; Driver Held
A man who lost control of his sports car on the San Joaquin Hills tollway resulting in an accident that killed his passenger Friday was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, officials said.
Richard Groom, 49, of Cypress was hospitalized at UCI Medical Center in Orange with moderate injuries. The passenger, Rodney Swain, 48, of Oxnard died at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, officials said.
The accident occurred about 10 a.m. near Newport Coast Drive. Police said Groom was driving a 2004 Dodge Viper south at about 100 mph when he lost control and hit the center divider.
