Avalanches killed at least four people, including a 31-year-old American, and seriously injured 10 others who strayed off trail for skiing and snowboarding in the Austrian Alps over the weekend.
Rescue workers called off their search for the American presumed to have been killed Saturday along with two Canadians, ages 40 and 57, in the western province of Tyrol. The snow slide, whose width was estimated at 300 yards, struck at an elevation of about 7,550 feet.
Earlier Saturday, a German snowboarder died in an avalanche in southwestern Austria.
