Seeing red over Red Cross fundraising

Re “The Red Cross money pit,” Current, Sept. 25
The Red Cross has such a strong name recognition that it’s almost a knee-jerk reaction to make a donation to the organization, even though it does spend a bundle on fundraising (that’s why it has that name recognition).
I have always taken it as an article of faith that the Red Cross will, in its infinite wisdom, parcel out the money where and when it is most needed. I now feel that my faith was misplaced and that I was too quick to reach for the credit card.
Richard Walden alludes to a multitude of nonprofit groups and relief agencies. How does one find out about them? Perhaps other agencies should put more energy into developing a public awareness.
