Gigantic TVs, shrinking movies

RE “Shouldn’t We Call It Huge-Screen TV?” [Jan. 12]: The article did not mention an ongoing problem with widescreen TVs.

Many stations are showing movies and tapes in the VHS format that were made in widescreen format but have had their sides clipped off in order to fit the vertical size of the past home TVs.

Now, to fit the wide screens, the top and bottom of this “formatted” version will need to be clipped off. So about one-quarter frame of the pictures as originally photographed will be visible to the viewer.
