Council OKs Center for Day Laborers

A day-laborer center outside a Home Depot was approved unanimously by the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday.
Home Depot is leasing the city space in its parking lot for $1 a year.
The nonprofit Youth Policy Institute will run the center.
Councilman Tony Cardenas, whose district includes Van Nuys, said he was aware of criticism that such centers attracted illegal immigrants.
But, he said, the overriding concern was to stop laborers from loitering in the parking lot and street.
