China’s past, through the gloom

It was cold and rainy the first few days that Lisa Holguin and her partner, Anne Buster, spent in Beijing. That made this black-and white shot, juxtaposing new and old China, even moodier. “I remember walking down these brick streets in the Forbidden City, and this guy working with no umbrella, carrying stones. And then this tourist walked by,” said Holguin, a cinematographer’s agent in Los Angeles. She took this picture with a Canon Sure Shot.
