Re “What the Supreme Court took away from us,” Opinion, June 20
The reversal of the tradition of “knock and announce” in police work isn’t a huge step on its own. But when you consider that the Bush administration doesn’t believe that warrants are always necessary, it’s hard not to be concerned by even this small chip off the bedrock of civil liberties.
How long before what’s at issue is reading a suspect his Miranda rights or getting a warrant in the first place? Has the libertarian wing of the Republican Party been completely silenced?
