Carson Plans Tobacco Seller Fee
The Carson City Council has voted unanimously to draft an ordinance requiring retailers to pay an annual fee to sell tobacco.
This week’s 5-0 vote came at the urging of the advocacy group Carson Coalition for Tobacco-Free Youth, which had children attempt to buy cigarettes and found they were able to do so 24% of the time.
Under the ordinance, store owners would have to purchase an annual city permit to carry any tobacco product. The revenue would go toward administration and sting operations to keep retailers from selling to children.
About 40 cities in the state have similar laws.
