War: It’s not just a metaphor

While I enjoyed Lina Lecaro’s article on former Blink-182 lead singer Tom DeLonge, [“Blink and He’s All Grown Up, May 11], I get more pleasure out of picturing her face during the interview when he bestowed such lines as “I’m using war as a metaphor for human conflict” or “There’s also a lot about World War II, which was like the last great romantic war.” How tempting it would have been to respond with something the likes of “Yes, Tom, nothing says ‘romance’ like two nuked Japanese cities and millions of murdered Jews” or the succinct, but still popular, “Tom, you ignorant slut.”
Laudably, Lecaro’s kind and carefully worded article suggests that a more generous spirit prevailed. If we could all exercise such restraint and equanimity, perhaps DeLonge’s “ideas of futurism and
