Biographer of Ataturk’s Wife Goes on Trial

A writer went on trial on charges of insulting the founder of modern Turkey in a biography of the revered late leader’s wife. Ipek Calislar faces up to 4 1/2 years in prison if convicted of insulting Kemal Ataturk.
Necdet Tatlican, an editor for the newspaper Hurriyet, also faces charges for publishing excerpts of Calislar’s book, “Latife Hanim,” which says Ataturk once fled the palace disguised as a woman to escape an assassination attempt.
