A brush fire broke out early Friday in Orange County’s Santa Ana Mountains, forcing authorities to use school buses to evacuate about 140 children camping in the area, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Miller.
The fire was thought to have begun in a small structure on the Lazy W Ranch campground near Ortega Highway and Hot Springs Canyon Road about 4:30 a.m.
A crew of 85 firefighters was able to extinguish it within four hours. Five acres were burned, Miller said. Fire investigators were still attempting to determine the fire’s cause late Friday.
