Proper pay for public service

Re “Top officials deserve top pay,” Opinion, April 7
Tim Hodson is completely correct. As someone who has worked at high levels in the federal and state government and in the private sector, I know how important it is to have very talented people doing the difficult public sector jobs that affect all of us. His example of California Health and Human Services Secretary Kim Belshe is well taken. If many more Californians receive health services this year, Belshe will have played an important role in that accomplishment, and we will all be better off for her competence and dedication to good public policy.
Hats off to Hodson for going against the popular trend and making us all recognize how important having capable and innovative public officials are to the well-being of our society.
