Deputy, second driver are killed in head-on crash

A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was killed Monday in a head-on collision.
Deputy Manuel Viegas, 33, of Indio was responding to a domestic violence call about 1 a.m. when an oncoming car swerved into his cruiser, California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Tami Low said. Viegas died instantly, she said. The driver of the other car, Jorge Alberto Martinez, 64, of Coachella, was also killed.
Viegas, who had served in the department for 17 months, is survived by his wife and three children.
