Hip-hop documentary joins AFI festival’s lineup

A documentary about the pioneering hip-hop group Public Enemy, the winner of the Palme d’Or prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and a feature directed by Gael García Bernal will be among the movies screening at this year’s AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival, organizers said Thursday.

The announcement came as the festival unveiled a list of 15 more films that will be having either their world premiere, U.S. premiere or L.A. premiere during the event, which runs Nov. 1-11.

“Public Enemy: Welcome to the Terrordome,” an examination of the group’s musical and social influence, is one of the films that will be screening for the first time anywhere.

Also in the AFI lineup is “4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days,” a Romanian drama that won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival; “Deficit,” a Mexican drama about class conflict that was directed by actor Bernal; “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” a film by Julian Schnabel about a stroke victim who manages to communicate by blinking one eye; and two films starring Ellen Page: “Juno,” in which she plays a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy, and “The Tracey Fragments,” about a woman searching for her brother.
