Chief denies role in police spying

The national police commander said his department’s intelligence service had spied on politicians and journalists without his knowledge, and he angrily accused a subordinate of directing the “dirty work.”
The announcement by Gen. Miguel Vasquez was prompted by materials sent anonymously to Bolivian news media this week that appeared to document efforts to follow opposition state governors, a TV reporter and two congressmen aligned with President Evo Morales.
Vasquez demanded that the national police intelligence service chief, Jose Luis Centellas, be held accountable for the alleged covert operations. Centellas declined to comment.
