Near-crash at JFK prompts review

From Times Wire Reports

The Federal Aviation Administration is studying whether to change takeoff and landing procedures again at John F. Kennedy International Airport after a second near-collision in less than a week.

The FAA directed a change in the way takeoffs and landings are sequenced on perpendicular runways Friday after two airliners -- one taking off, one landing -- came within half a mile of each other. Six days earlier, a similar incident occurred. Acting FAA Administrator Robert Sturgell said a preliminary investigation traced both incidents to communication problems.
