Big families, even bigger problems

Re “Big-Family Shows Keep Multiplying,” by Yvonne Villarreal, March 30: With the planet strained to the breaking point under an avalanche of human overpopulation, it’s unconscionable for anyone to have such huge families. It’s the equivalent of buying an 18-wheeler truck to commute to the office: a selfish and unsustainable overuse of the Earth’s limited resources.
We need to control the urge to over-procreate as desperately as we need to control the urge to overeat and to overuse electricity, water and oil. Our politicians ought to start talking about the population problem, but in the end, the ethics and desires of the people will decide our common fate, not our leaders.
We are at a crossroads; future generations will judge us by whether we took the steps needed to ensure a good quality of life for them -- or not.
