U.S. gives $10 million to four California cities to spur job growth

The Commerce Department is providing $10 million in grants to support four California projects that will bring 1,000 jobs to the state, Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said Wednesday.
California was one of 11 states the Commerce Department targeted for $21 million of grants aimed at spurring economic and job growth.
The grants “will help implement economic development projects that aim to boost job creation and sustainable economies in 11 states,” Pritzker said in a news release.
The California grants are aimed at four rural communities. They include:
--$3 million to the city of Imperial to support the development of a regional center that will include retail shopping, dining establishments, commercial and professional office buildings, entertainment complexes, farmland and agricultural facilities.
--$3 million to the city of Mount Shasta to support a new water bottling plant and other business development to diversify the local economy.
--$1.8 million to the city of Delano to help build a rail spur to connect the city with an industrial park and increase commercial activity.
--$1.8 million to Yuba County to make water system improvements and expand an industrial park.
Commerce Department grants are also being awarded to Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Missouri, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.
