‘Bring It On’ musical opening on Broadway this summer

Unlike some blockbuster stage musicals that debut on Broadway before hitting the road for a national tour, “Bring It On: The Musical” is taking something of a reverse route -- touring first and then booking a Broadway engagement.
The effervescent musical, based on the 2000 Kirsten Dunst movie, will begin performances at the St. James Theatre in New York in July for an official opening set for Aug. 1. The St. James was most recently the Broadway home for the musical “Leap of Faith,” which closed Sunday following poor ticket sales.
“Bring It On” is set to run on Broadway through Oct. 7. The musical had its world premiere at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre last year before kicking off a national tour in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre in November.
The musical was embroiled in a legal dispute when screenwriter Jessica Bendinger -- who penned the original movie -- claimed that the show’s producers never acquired or received permission to use her exclusive rights.
Bendinger reached an undisclosed settlement with the producers of the musical in October.
“Bring It On” features a high pedigree of writing talent, including Tony-winners Lin-Manuel Miranda and Tom Kitt, who co-wrote the score. The book for the musical is by Jeff Whitty, a Tony-winner for “Avenue Q.”
The show is currently playing in Toronto has part of its North American tour.
