Emmys 2013 tops Twitter rankings, followed by ‘Breaking Bad’

If there’s one thing you can count on from awards shows, it’s that they will be heavily tweeted about, and Sunday night’s Emmys telecast was no exception.

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, in which “Breaking Bad,” “Modern Family” and “Behind the Candelabra” walked away with top honors, drew 924,700 tweets during its three-hour run, the most of any show for the week ended Sept. 22, according to Nielsen’s SocialGuide.

The awards show was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, who was joined by past hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Jane Lynch and Conan O’Brien during the opening monologue.

While more than 900,000 tweets is certainly a big number, the Emmys didn’t do as well on the social media site as recent youth-oriented galas, including Fox’s “Teen Choice Awards,” which got 4.4 million.

MTV’s Video Music Awards last month generated a whopping 18.5 million mentions, thanks in part to Miley Cyrus’ much-mocked performance.

The first runner-up for the past week was the penultimate episode of AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” which brought in 325,000 tweets.

Fox’s Wednesday episode of Simon Cowell’s “The X Factor” came in third, followed by the premiere of “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC.

The series finale of the serial killer drama “Dexter” on Showtime was tweeted about more than 126,000 times, and the season closers of CBS’ “Big Brother” and NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” generated more than 100,000.

10. “America’s Got Talent” (NBC). Wednesday. 106,100 tweets.
