‘The Spectacular Now’: Sundance hit spawns screening series

“The Spectacular Classics” is a new screening series inspired by “The Spectacular Now,” the coming-of-age romance starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley that took Sundance by storm and opens Aug. 2.

Landmark Theaters across the country, as well as the Los Feliz 3 and the Angelika in Dallas, have joined forces to curate the series, which will present an iconic coming-of-age film each week leading up to the release of “The Spectacular Now.”

A video introduction will precede each screening by “Spectacular Now” screenwriters Michael Weber and Scott Neustadter.

Screening on Tuesday at the Los Feliz 3 is Cameron Crowe’s 1989 cult romance “Say Anything” with John Cusack and Ione Skye, which features the indelible scene of Cusack playing Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” from his boom box.

On tap for July 16 is Richard Linklater’s 1993 favorite “Dazed and Confused,” which follows a group of high school students on their last day of class. The comedy stars a very young Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey and Mila Jovovich.

Scheduled for July 23 is Crowe’s semi-autobiographical “Almost Famous,” which features Kate Hudson in her Oscar-nominated performance as rock groupie Penny Lane.

The series ends July 30 with the ultimate coming-of-age film -- John Hughes’ 1985 classic “The Breakfast Club,” starring Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall.
