African American Film Critics Assn. to honor ‘Boyz N the Hood’ and ‘New Jack City’

The African American Film Critics Assn. announced that it will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the films “Boyz N the Hood” and “New Jack City” with an all-star tribute and concert celebrating the hip-hop cinema genre at the association’s annual awards ceremony Feb. 10 at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood.
“Hip-hop has had a global impact on pop culture and influenced millions around the world,” Gil Robertson, the association’s president and co-founder, said in a statement Monday. “And its impact on Hollywood has been a major game-changer in front of and behind the camera and at box office.”

“AAFCA’s Celebration of Hip-Hop Cinema” will pay homage to both narrative and documentary films that represent the hip-hop culture, as well as the actors and filmmakers involved in the films.
The organization also announced Monday the recipients of the 2016 AAFCA Special Achievement Awards -- “Boyz N the Hood” director John Singleton; producer Jeff Clanagan; New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis; Cleveland Cavaliers’ superstar Lebron James, who is in the box office hit comedy “Trainwreck’; and the film production company Plan B (“12 Years a Slave” and “Selma”).
