Starz renews ‘Black Sails’ for another season ahead of premiere

“Black Sails,” the new pirate series on Starz executive produced by Michael Bay, doesn’t premiere until January 2014, but the cable channel has already given the greenlight to Season 2.
With the expense involved in filming a swashbuckling series overseas, it makes sense to not leave the production waiting idly for the show to premiere. And with the audience for cable drama seemingly always growing, it’s a safe bet that this series will justify the second season.
“Based on the strong fan response to the preview screening at last week’s Comic-Con, we felt an early order for a second season would allow the writers, cast and crew enough time and space to continue crafting such unique and epic storytelling,” Starz Chief Executive Chris Albrecht said in a statement.
Set 20 years before the events in Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island,” the series follows the adventures of Capt. Flint (Toby Stephens) as he fights for the survival of the pirate haven of New Providence Island alongside a mouthy new addiition to his crew named Long John Silver (Luke Arnold).
Other members of the cast include Zach McGowan, Toby Schmitz, Hannah New, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Jessica Parker Kennedy and Tom Hopper.
The series, which shoots in Cape Town, South Africa, will resume production in November for a 10-episode second season.
