Altercation sparked 91 Freeway shooting; attackers flee scene

An altercation between people in two vehicles led to a shooting on the 91 Freeway on Thursday night that left two victims wounded and snarled traffic on the busy artery, authorities said.

The violence began about 8:45 p.m. on the westbound lanes near Bellflower Boulevard as the confrontation broke out between the occupants in a Honda Accord and a 2013 Chrysler sedan, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Honda smashed into the center wall of the freeway and the other vehicle ran into the right shoulder wall. Two males got of the Honda and at least one of them opened fire on the two people inside the Chrysler, CHP Capt. Daniel Minor told reporters.

He said the driver was struck by at least three rounds and that the passenger was hit at least once.

The two attackers fled on foot and apparently were scooped up by occupants in another vehicle, according to what witnesses told officers.

Minor said officers were responding to a Bell Gardens address listed on the Honda registration.

The CHP declared a SigAlert on the westbound freeway shortly before 9 p.m. as officers shut down lanes while investigators gathered evidence. Some of the lanes were expected to be opened as soon as possible, the CHP said.

The two victims were taken to a local hospital. One was in critical condition and the other was hit in the elbow, according to the CHP.
