Connecticut campus suspect might have been in Halloween costume

The man who was walking through a Central Connecticut State University campus while possibly carrying weapons might have actually been in a Halloween costume, the campus police chief said Monday.

Three college-aged men were taken into custody but not formally arrested after police received calls of an armed man on the New Britain campus early Monday afternoon, chief Chris Cervoni said at a news conference held shortly after officials ended a campus lockdown.

No shots were reported fired, and no one was hurt.

The three men were found together on the fourth floor on James Hall, Cervoni said, and did not struggle with police and have since cooperated with investigators. No weapons have been found, though Cervoni added that police were still searching the dorm.

Cervoni said officials had received “more than one” 911 call about a possible armed man on campus with a “sword-like” object or gun, with several students directing police toward a possible suspect after they arrived.

“It wasn’t a prank because there was concern,” Cervoni said. “There was alarm.”

Photos from the campus shared over social media showed at least two young men being led away by police, with one man wearing an orange shirt and camouflage pants.

Cervoni said at least one of the young men was a student, but couldn’t confirm if the other two young men were students too. He said officials were still investigating the incident and have not filed charges.
