Letters: Nathan Fletcher’s GOP defection

Re “Patt Morrison Asks: Nathan Fletcher,” Opinion, April 28

The out-of-town infatuation with San Diego mayoral candidate and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher is hard to fathom.

Of course, the “story” is that Fletcher recently broke ranks with the Republican Party and is now running as an independent. Shades of former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, and how did that turn out?

Following a stint working for the disgraced (and now convicted felon) former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, Fletcher got elected to the Assembly as a Republican and later declared his candidacy for mayor as a Republican. Only after he unsuccessfully sought the endorsement of the San Diego County Republican Party — losing to City Councilman Carl DeMaio — did he “transcend” partisan politics and switch his registration.

Now he says, “My goal in life is not successful partisan politics.” It was until he lost his bid for the GOP endorsement.

Fletcher recognized that he was a walking anachronism in a Republican Party that has morphed from traditional conservatism to an extreme radicalism. This modern version of the GOP brooks no compromise with Democrats or moderate members of its own party who dare to disagree with its radical agenda.

Republican Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon would have been denounced as pawns of socialism if they ran today.

The republic will not be stable until the current-day Republican Party is soundly trounced in November.
