Readers React: San Gabriel Mountains National Monument: a work in progress

To the editor: The editorial board was correct in noting that the San Gabriel Mountains need more protection by the federal government. (“Obama didn’t go far enough: The San Gabriel Mountains need more protections,” Editorial, Oct. 29)
President Obama’s decision to protect much of the San Gabriels as a national monument was a tremendous first step in the right direction. The national monument designation safeguards water sources, preserves much-needed open space and helps improve access. After more than a decade of community work to protect the San Gabriels, the designation is a welcome sign of progress and recognition of the value of this amazing place.
However, there is still more to be done to realize the full vision of a protected San Gabriel Mountains with access for all. As part of the San Gabriel Mountains Forever coalition, I look forward to building on Obama’s accomplishment with improved visitor services in the forest and added recreation and green space in the urban river areas that are in the “backyards” of many communities.

To the editor: What would have been gained if San Gabriel Mountains National Monument had not been designated thus? Absolutely nothing.
Those who wanted a larger area can still work to influence their elected leaders and the public. Some is better than none, and half a loaf is better than none.
