Readers React: Experiencing L.A. by bus

To the editor: I am 71 and have used public transportation exclusively since 1994, when my car was destroyed during the Northridge earthquake. As painful as it was to move from one “relationship to another,” I have never regretted the decision. (“Bus service may ease I-5 worries,” Nov. 19)

In fact, the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has improved the system so enormously that when I needed to go from Hollywood to Hermosa Beach two weeks ago, what I thought might be an all-day trip turned out to be both efficient and pleasant — two words not often said about any bus system.

The bus line proposed to close the “transit gap” between the Orange and Red Lines in North Hollywood and the Gold Line in Pasadena is not only necessary, it also presents a viable alternative to driving. These new gap-closing lines will not only make travel quicker, they will also provide a new way to enjoy and explore L.A.
