High School Roundup: Newport Harbor, Laguna Beach girls’ water polo teams advance to Open Division semifinals

Taylor Smith and Morgan Netherton each scored three goals as the Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo team earned a 16-7 win over Santa Margarita on Thursday night in a CIF Southern Section Open Division quarterfinal match at Newport Harbor.
Bia Mantellato, Avery Montiel, Lily Gess and Alex Love each scored twice for the top-seeded Sailors. Paige Naegle and Ryan Chalupnik added one goal each.
Newport Harbor (24-1) will play Foothill in an Open Division semifinal match Wednesday at Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. The Knights upset No. 4-seeded Los Alamitos 7-6 in another quarterfinal match.
Laguna Beach 9, San Marcos 8 (OT): Junior center Charlotte Riches scored four goals for the No. 2-seeded Breakers, who avoided the upset bid Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Open Division playoff quarterfinal match at Newport Harbor High.
Hannah Carver scored twice for the Breakers (24-5), and Lela McCarroll, Ava Knepper and Ava Houlahan added one goal each. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Schneider made 11 saves.
Laguna Beach plays No. 3-seeded Orange Lutheran in an Open Division semifinal match Wednesday at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center.
Fountain Valley 11, Cerritos 3: The Barons cruised into the CIF Southern Section Division 5 quarterfinals after winning Thursday’s second-round match at Westminster High.
Fountain Valley (17-12) will play at No. 2-seeded JSerra in a quarterfinal match Saturday.
Woodbridge 14, Costa Mesa 5: The Mustangs’ season ended on the road Thursday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
Costa Mesa finished 16-10, while No. 2-seeded Woodbridge improved to 17-4.
Mustangs coach Dustin Serrano said that sophomore Adelaide Juelfs scored three goals, finishing the season with 105 goals.
