Boys’ basketball: Narbonne is waiting for the cavalry to arrive after football season
- Share via
Narbonne is 2-2 on the basketball season, but wait until football season ends. The Gauchos have four key players still involved in the football playoffs.
Narbonne plays in a state Division 1-A bowl game on Saturday in Bakersfield against Ridgeview, and if the Gauchos win, they’ll be still busy all next week preparing for a Dec. 19 game in Sacramento.
But basketball Coach Anthony Hilliard is the football team’s biggest fan.
“Those are my guys,” he said. “That would be great if they won a state title.”
Offensive lineman Alex Akingbulu and safety Jamal Hicks were starters in basketball last season. Also on the football team set to play basketball are safety Daniel Brown and linebacker Dominic Peterson.
“We’re going to be all right,” Hilliard said. “We have other guys ready to go.”
Narbonne begins Marine League play next week against Carson.
But once the Gauchos are at full strength, they should be one of the top six teams in City Section Division I.
