Boys’ basketball: Verdugo Hills advances with overtime win over Bell

Leoni Aleksan contributed 28 points, eight assists and six rebounds to help Verdugo Hills hold off Bell, 62-52, in overtime on Wednesday night in a first-round City Section Division I playoff opener.
Adrian Gutierrez added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Carter Otte had nine assists and two game-saving free throws at the end of regulation. Verdugo Hills will play East Valley League rival Poly in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Sylmar knocked off Fremont, 68-59, and will face No. 1 seeded Palisades. Tyler Hooks scored 19 points and Will Clark 17. Garfield defeated Chatsworth, 71-67. Alexis Farias had 25 points. Washington defeated Kennedy, 42-25.
In Division II, Marshall defeated Manaul Arts, 50-37. Grant defeated Hollywood, 49-39. Chad Holloway had 17 points. King-Drew defeated Bravo, 51-28.
In Division III, Mike Commey scored 16 points and Josh Appling had 15 points in Van Nuys’ 71-53 win over Angelou. No. 1 North Hollywood defeated Jefferson, 70-62. Roybal defeated Marquez, 65-47.
In Division IV, Stephen Rocklin scored 28 points in Sherman Oaks CES’s 75-44 win over Animo De La Hoya.
