Football: School begins, and City Section coaches need a few good recruits

The beginning of classes on Tuesday in the Los Angeles Unified School District couldn’t come soon enough for lots of City Section coaches who have been strugglng to get players out for football.
During the summer, Reseda Coach Alonso Arreola said he had 27 varsity players and 14 JV players, including just four incoming freshmen.
It makes it difficult to practice, but with school starting, he’s hoping new students will want to join the team.
“We’ll give everybody an opportunity, because we definitely need some bodies,” he said.
Reseda’s varsity has a standout receiver-defensive back in senior Eddie Cortez.
Arreola always does the best he can with whomever shows up. He was trained by Joel Schaeffer, the late former Reseda coach who loved being a Regent.
Reseda has dropped to under 1,800 in enrollment, but Arreola keeps plugging away.
