Another sprinter linked to doping at world championships

While Usain Bolt electrified the track-and-field world championships over the weekend, the specter of performance-enhancing drugs continued to hover over the competition like a dark cloud.

Marquee sprinters Tyson Gay of the U.S. and Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson of Jamaica did not make the trip to Moscow after failing recent drug tests. Other Jamaican athletes were similarly found to have banned substances in their systems.

Now comes word that Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago has withdrawn from the 100 meters.

The 26-year-old sprinter won a bronze medal at the 2011 world championships.

Her athletics federation confirmed Monday that Baptiste’s withdrawal was “related to doping matters,” according to the Associated Press.

Baptiste had planned to compete not only in the 100, but also the 200 and 400 relay. One of her teammates, sprinter Semoy Hackett, also skipped the meet for doping matters, the national federation said.

Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica, a 2011 silver medalist in the 100, was recently suspended from competition while her doping case is reviewed by authorities.
