Laguna Hills player makes latest cut for U.S. women’s hockey team

Anne Pankowski of Laguna Hills, a former member of the Junior and Lady Duck hockey programs, was named to the U.S. women’s national team’s 25-player roster on Monday.

From that roster, 21 players will be chosen to represent the U.S. at the Winter Olympics next February in Sochi, Russia.

The roster includes 12 women who have played in the Olympics. Three-time Olympian Julie Chu of Fairfield, Conn., is the most experienced and oldest player at 31.

One more roster cut will be made, in late December, to get to the limit of 18 skaters and three goaltenders.

Pankowski, 18, played at the mite and squirt levels for the Anaheim Junior Ducks and later for the Lady Ducks. Her team won the 12-under national title in 2007.

The 5-foot-8 forward played for the U.S. 18-and-under women’s select team and won a silver medal at the 2012 World Championships.

Pankowski, a graduate of Santa Margarita Catholic High, will be a freshman at the University of Wisconsin.

One notable omission from the U.S. team is Jenny Potter, the only American woman to play in all four hockey tournaments since the sport was added to the Olympics. She has essentially retired.
