Tonight, LAX pylons will go green -- and then dark -- to mark Earth Hour

Earth Hour will come early to Los Angeles International Airport. The ring of 15 100-foot-tall towers near the airport’s entrance will light up a solid green at 7:30 p.m. -- an hour before Earth Hour -- and remain illuminated for 60 minutes. Then the lights will go out from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., an airport news release says.
The airport is joining a climate-change awareness campaign in which millions worldwide are expected to shut off their lights for one hour starting at 8:30 p.m. all over the world.
The LAX Gateway pylons, as they are officially known, have a green side beyond the color of the light. In 2005, the iconic towers were retrofitted with 2,000 LED fixtures that consume 75% less energy than the previous 736 lamps, according to the news release. After Earth Hour ends at 9:30 p.m., the pylons will resume changing colors.
Other major landmarks -- Big Ben in London, the Burj al Arab Hotel in Dubai, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, the Acropolis in Athens among them -- will go dark to show solidarity for the event, which began in 2007.
